We have an immediate opening for an Environmental Specialist to ensure environmental compliance for a renewable energy construction project between Rochester, NY and Buffalo. This role will involve several days a week of field work and inspections as well as remote work. The ideal candidate will have experience in the preconstruction and a strong foundation in environmental compliance practices.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure project adherence to all environmental regulations and standards, specifically focusing on Bureau of Land Management (BLM) requirements.
  • Conduct pre-construction clearance surveys to identify and mitigate potential environmental impacts.
  • Perform Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) inspections, ensuring all protocols are followed to prevent sediment/erosion pollution.
  • Monitor the project area for species of concern, ensuring the protection of wildlife and natural habitats during construction activities.
  • Assist in conducting environmental impact assessments and risk evaluations.
  • Perform regular field inspections to ensure compliance with environmental best management practices and project specifications.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate daily and weekly reports as specified in the project documents, documenting all environmental compliance activities, inspections, and monitoring efforts.
  • Participate in daily and weekly pre-construction look-ahead meetings to proactively address environmental considerations and ensure compliance.
  • Participate in weekly progress meetings, providing updates on environmental compliance and addressing any concerns.
  • Assist in developing and delivering environmental training programs for construction teams, promoting awareness and adherence to environmental regulations.
  • Collaborate with local, state, and federal land management agencies, addressing environmental concerns and ensuring transparent communication.
  • Maintain good communication with the Owner's Construction Inspection team, the Company's Environmental Management team, and construction crews to ensure smooth project execution.
  • Assist in developing and implementing mitigation strategies to minimize environmental impacts and support project sustainability.
  • Respond to environmental incidents, taking appropriate actions to mitigate impacts and report to relevant authorities.

Skills & Abilities:

  • Basic understanding of environmental laws and regulations, particularly those related to BLM.
  • Knowledge of environmental best management practices and field construction practices.
  • Strong observational and analytical skills, with the ability to conduct thorough inspections and surveys.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work well with diverse teams and stakeholders.
  • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage documentation and maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize tasks effectively in a dynamic field environment.
  • Professional demeanor with a commitment to environmental compliance.
  • Proficiency in GIS and field data collection methods.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word for documentation and reporting purposes.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Wildlife Biology, Ecology, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in environmental compliance, preferably in the transmission line or energy infrastructure industry.
  • Experience conducting pre-construction surveys, SWPPP inspections, and biological monitoring.
  • Familiarity with local, state, and federal land management agencies.
  • Relevant certifications (e.g., CISEC, CESSWI, or CPESC) are a plus but not required.
